Watsu® (short for Water Shiatsu) was developed in the early 1980s by Harold Dull in Harbin Hot Springs, California.
Dull was originally a poet and Zen practitioner who studied Shiatsu massage in Japan. After bringing those principles back to the United States, he began experimenting with something new—what would happen if the same ideas of meridian-based bodywork, presence, & breath were brought into warm, supportive water.
What he discovered changed the direction of his work entirely.
Traditional Shiatsu is performed on land, using finger pressure, stretching, and energetic pathways to support balance in the body.
But in water, something different became possible.
When the body is supported by buoyancy, gravity no longer pulls in the same way. Movement becomes easier. Joints decompress. Muscles are no longer required to hold or stabilize in the same way they do on land.
This opened the door to a new kind of bodywork:
one that blends floating, stretching, stillness, and gentle movement into a continuous, flowing experience.

From there, she works with your tissues directly—muscle, fascia, & trigger points—while staying attuned to the nervous system so change can land without overwhelm.
